(recipe here)
This weekend was the first one that really felt like fall, which led to a trip to a local orchard for apple picking and the first Starbucks pumpkin misto of the season. I love everything about fall: changing leaves, football, layering clothes, tall boots, Halloween, heartier meals, and crisp temperatures. It means the holidays are coming, which always gets me excited! What are your favorite things to do in the fall?

Classic Chocolate Birthday Cake
Today we celebrated M's birthday with a family cookout. The menu included frosty margaritas, grilled corn on the cob, sausage and pepper sandwiches, farmer's market tomatoes, and of course a chocolate birthday cake! I used this recipe, and although it was time consuming, it was fun to make and a major hit with the whole fam! Plus, I can now cross another item off of my summer bucket list.

Poker Face
It's another Friday, which means another game of poker here at the apartment. The sound of clinking chips is actually starting to grow on me. I'm busy itinerizing (is that even a word?) the weekend, because that's what I do. I foresee at least one trip to the movies, lots of time spent outside in the sun, morning jogs on the boulevard, some Pinkberry, and maybe the beginning of an herb garden on the porch. Oh, and of course lots of grilling!
What fun things do you have planned for the holiday weekend?

Fighting the Rainy Day Blues
It was chilly and dreary all day today. It's really starting to feel like summer will never come to New England. I've decided that the show must go on! I fought the rainy day blues by grilling up some turkey burgers for dinner. Maybe if we act like it's spring the sun will finally shine for a few consecutive days.
Here's to hoping!

Channeling Summer
I can't wait to grill outside every single night as soon as it gets warm enough. I'm hoping that making some barbecue-inspired dinners will get the weather to cooperate sooner! Tonight we had burgers (on the indoor grill pan) with these baked sweet potato fries. They were amazing!

Cherry on Top

Cherries are my all-time favorite fruit. They're sweet and tart and great to snack on. I love this time of year when the first batches of fresh cherries start showing up at local markets. I bought a bag just yesterday and I've already gone through almost half of it! They're just that good. I'm also looking forward to finding some juicy peaches and local tomatoes at the farmer's market in the coming weeks. I love summertime! Nothing beats simple summer suppers of grilled veggies and chicken or shrimp. Now I just have to get my little herb garden planted so I can cook with home grown basil and cilantro!
What's your favorite summer fruit?
