Sweet Stuff

Last Sunday, I had the pleasure of going on a little adventure to Boston. My first stop to fuel up: Flour Bakery. It was such a cute little placed tucked in the first floor of some loft-style offices. They had a huge chalkboard with the daily menu written out as well as a great selection of coffee drinks. I've heard that their cinnamon sticky buns are to die for, so that's what I came for. By the time we got there (around 11am) they were all sold out! I settled for a homemade oreo cookie. It was amazing. Seriously. It tasted just like a real oreo, but better and homemade. Not exactly the breakfast of champions, but it was worth it. M had a breakfast sandwich on a freshly baked focaccia roll. I loved the bakery because the staff was friendly and upbeat, even though the line was long. They write out your order on a pad of paper and it's all made to order (sandwiches, french toast, etc.), so it's super fresh. I can't wait to go back and try the cinnamon buns sometime soon! Don't you love their logo with the cracked egg?!

Our main stop for the day was the Boston Museum of Science to see the special Harry Potter exhibit (yes, I'm a nerd). I've been dying to see it ever since I laid eyes on the billboard. It's only in town until the end of February so I knew we had to go asap! I made the huge mistake of not pre-ordering tickets online and the exhibit was sold out for the entire day. Tear. The good news is, we scored some passes from M's friend to see the exhibit during the week (when it won't be so hectic). I will be sure to post after seeing the exhibit. The anticipation has been building for weeks now and the fact that it's been selling out makes it even more exciting!

We did stick around and browse the museum's permanent exhibit halls. It was so much fun because almost everything has some hands-on component (my kinda place). My favorite part was probably the lightning show in the Theater of Electricity. They actually created a full lightning storm indoors! Very exciting. We ended the day with dumplings and wonton soup at P.F. Chang's (yum!) and then made the trek back home to Providence. It was a fun little excursion. I can't wait to go back next week for the Potter spectacular!

Lucky Me!

I never win anything, so you can imagine my excitement/astonishment when this showed up on one of my favorite blogs. Yes, I won! I won an adorable set of owl notecards made by cardsink. I'm so lucky! I feel like I should run out and buy a powerball ticket for the 140 million dollar drawing tomorrow. Okay, that might be pushing my luck. In the meantime, I'll be anxiously awaiting my notecards in the mail!

Say Cheese

I'm fascinated by vintage cameras. They produce unique pictures and they just look fun and retro. Take this remake of a classic camera. It makes me want to get out in the world and start snapping away! I'm afraid real photographs printed on glossy paper are being replaced by digital computer files. I love digging through boxes of old photos from when I was a kid. My sisters and I used to sit in the dark and watch slide shows of old family photos. I can't help but wonder, are our kids just going to have to click through computer files to see memories? Will they even know what film is?

I'm looking into buying one of these vintage remakes. There are quite a few over at Urban Outfitters. It's a little overwhelming. Does anyone have any good tips? Do you own a Holga or a Diana?

Sail Away

I'm currently in love with this nautical-looking shift dress from Anthropologie. I'm inspired by all things ocean-related, and I could see myself sipping a margarits by the beach while wearing this. I think it would look cute under a jean jacket with a pair of comfy flip flops and a bright colored bag or headband for a pop of color. The perfect outfit for an afternoon spent walking around Newport!

Cupcakes & Penguins-Oh My!

Does a cuter duo exist?! I love both of these things so much that I know I'll love this book (and I haven't even read it yet). I've heard about it, but have yet to get a copy of my very own. I can tell just by the cover that I'm going to enjoy reading it. And what better way to celebrate this book than by enjoying a penguin cupcake afterwards? The candy fish they're holding are so fun!

These cupcakes can be found in the book Hello, Cupcake! which I do own and enjoy very much. I have attempted a few of their creative recipes but they never turn out quite right. The decorating books are still fun to look at for ideas (like the corn on the cob made with yellow jellybeans). It's amazing what people can do with such a tiny treat!

Peppermint Patty

I just scooped up this pretty mint colored polish because a. it was on sale & b. it resembles Chanel's limited edition jade polish (that I don't own). I know it's part of their winter collection, but I think it'll make a nice transition over to spring as well. It even looks like the mint juleps served at the Kentucky Derby-mmm! I'm still disappointed I don't own the jade polish, but I absolutely refuse to pay $100 for it on ebay. I have to draw the line somewhere! Essie polishes are great--I was obsessed with California Coral that was sold through J. Crew last summer.

Up--Not a Total Downer

I've purposefully been procrastinating seeing Pixar's recent release "Up" because I heard it was sad. Like extremely sad. I just don't need a movie like that in my life. I deal with enough sad situations with kids and families on a regular basis. Last night I finally decided to take the plunge and rent it aaaannnd (drumroll) I loved it! I thought it was very well done, the animation was amazing, and the characters were so cute! I don't know how they can get an animated movie to look so vibrant and realistic! It's incredible. The story itself does have some sad parts to it (especially in the beginning) but overall, the message was overwhelmingly positive. It's an adventure that takes some surprising turns. I don't want to give anything away for those of you who haven't seen it, but it would make a cute stay-at-home Valentine's Day rental. It made me feel lucky to have someone's hand to squeeze during the "adventure book" sequences. It also gave me a little sense of nostalgia about what's really important and how the people in our lives are so much more meaningful than the things. Like most "kiddie" movies, there is a bigger message that everyone can & should relate to. Bottom line: Up pulled on my heartstrings.
